American Eskimo Dog Breed Information

Appearance

Nicknamed "the beautiful dog", the American Eskimo Dog is a double-coated, all white, or white and biscuit colored dog with a black nose, lips and eye rims. A robust, Nordic type dog, the American Eskimo Dog carries his tail curled over his back. He is a compactly built, medium-sized dog ranging from 9-19 inches in height. He has an intelligent and alert expression, most often seen with his triangular ears perked, vigilantly aware of his surroundings.

Personality

The American Eskimo Dog is a friendly, playful and remarkably intelligent dog. He is a very obedient dog that is easily trained, preferably with positive reinforcement. They are a fairly sensitive dog and pick up the meaning of keywords quite quickly. A firm "NO" usually suffices in disciplining the eskie. At one time, the agile little eskie was often seen performing in various circus acts. They are very good watch dogs, slightly conservative, but not aggressive. In my household, that means, bark profusely at strangers, look them over quickly, then run and beg for attention (licking is optional)! They are a very affectionate dog with a strong desire to please. The American Eskimo dog is good with children and make great family pets.

Grooming

I am often asked how I keep my little white dogs clean and if I bathe them often. They do not require frequent baths as their coat carries natural oils to repel the dirt. After a good romp/roll in the mud, they dry off nicely and the dirt falls off on it's own. They have no "doggie odor" and do not need to be bathed often, however, frequent brushing is needed to prevent matting. They do not need excessive grooming. When bathed, a blow dryer on cool heat and a slicker brush perform the job nicely. Do they shed? Yes, males "blow" their coat once a year and females twice a year. When they begin to blow their coat, I usually give them a warm bath, blow dry them, and most of it comes out all at once.
